WATCH: Lily James, Armie Hammer and Dame Kristin Scott Thomas in Creepy First Trailer for 'Rebecca'

The first trailer for the new movie adaptation of Rebecca is here – and it definitely captures the dark intrigue of the enduringly popular novel by Daphne du Maurier.

Lily James stars as du Maurier's heroine, a relatively inexperienced young woman only ever referred to as "the second Mrs. de Winter." When she marries handsome aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), she moves to his grand house by the sea in southwestern England, Manderley, and finds that newlywed life isn't quite as idyllic as she had imagined.

It turns out Manderley is dominated by its frosty housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Dame Kristin Scott Thomas), and the specter of Maxim's first wife Rebecca seems to loom large over the house.

Judging from the trailer below, Scott Thomas is going to be on wickedly watchable form as the increasingly disturbed housekeeper.

Due to premiere October 31 on Netflix, the new movie adaptation of Rebecca is directed by Ben Wheatley (High-Rise, Free Fire) from a screenplay co-written by by Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service). Keeley Hawes, Ann Dowd, and Sam Riley also appear in supporting roles.

First published in 1938, Rebecca has been adapted for film and TV on numerous occasions over the years. Most notably, Sir Alfred Hitchcock turned it into an Oscar-winning 1940 film starring Sir Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine.
