New Trailer: 'Killing Eve's Emerald Fennell Makes Feature Debut with 'Promising Young Woman'
Emerald Fennell took over showrunning duties for season two of Killing Eve and has since passed on the KE baton to Suzanne Heathcote for season three. And what does one do after working on the best TV show in the entire world (we're kind of biased)?
Fennell has completed filming on the feature-length killer-thriller Promising Young Woman, which she both wrote and directed. Carey Mulligan takes the lead, starring as a young woman named Cassie. In the just released trailer (December 11), we see Cassie sloppily drunk at a bar, with a bystander thinking to himself, "Good God almighty. They put themselves in danger, girls like that." A not-so-nice nice guy offers to help her home.
Things become very sobering once behind closed doors:
We learn Cassie has suffered through a traumatic experience. It's not quite mapped out word-for-word, but it seems something happened to a friend, possibly in childhood, and she blames herself for not being there.
As Cassie explains to the viewer, she goes to bars and acts as if she's so drunk that she can't stand. Basically, she's making herself bait. Pegging off douchebags she meets at the bar won't bring her friend back. But, it appears to give her some sort of satisfaction.
You can look for other familiar faces like Adam Brody, Connie Britton, Alison Brie and Molly Shannon.
When the film was first announced, Fennell released a statement, saying, "Frankly, I feel lucky to be allowed anywhere in the vicinity of so many geniuses, and I can’t wait to bring this twisted tale to life," reports Variety.
Promising Young Woman hits theaters on April 17, 2020.
