Anna Friel and Susan Sarandon are to star as power-hungry country music singers in Monarch, a new musical drama series coming to Fox.
Sarandon will play Dottie Cantrell Roman, the reigning queen of country music and the "tough as nails" matriarch of the formidable Roman clan, Deadline reports. Friel will co-star as Nicolette Roman, the heir to Dottie's crown and a woman equally keen to preserve her family's legacy, which isn't quite as watertight as it might seem.
The series, due to premiere in January, has been created by Melissa London Hilfers with Michael Rauch (Instinct, Royal Pains) serving as showrunner. Leading country music manager Jason Owen, whose clients include Kacey Musgraves and Faith Hill, is on board as an executive producer.
We recently rounded up 10 roles that made us love Anna Friel, from Pushing Daisies to Marcella. For a taste of Friel's singing voice, check out this clip of the actress singing "Sweet Morning Dew" in her 2006 movie Irish Jam.
Sarandon has shown off her singing chops in numerous projects over the years, perhaps most notably in the cult 1975 musical movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
