5 Places to Celebrate Thanksgiving When Abroad
You don't have to be stateside to give thanks. It may not be exactly the same if you're traveling, working or studying abroad, but celebrating Thanksgiving is still doable even if you're not at home. Online American expat boards and meetup groups are a great way to find others looking to get together. Or you may just walk up to one of these places and find some like-minded people in a thankful mood:
1. Berlin, Germany

Belushi's Bar, in Berlin, Germany, located at Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 41, is hosting a three-course Thanksgiving roast dinner from 7-10:00pm for 17 Euros ($18). In addition to the comfort food and good company waiting on you, the bar will be screening NFL football live. The bar accepts reservations, or you can play it by ear and walk in.
2. Dublin, Ireland
[caption id="attachment_348250" align="alignnone" width="1024"] The Merry Ploughboy is a nice option when looking for a home away from home. (Facebook)[/caption]
The Merry Ploughboy Pub, located at Rockbrook, Edmondstown Rd, Rathfarnham, in Dublin, Ireland offers dinner and a show on Thanksgiving. You can enjoy turkey filled with cranberry sage and chestnut stuffing while watching traditional Irish dancing and music. The dinner kicks off at 6:30pm. You can purchase tickets online, and it's £49.50 ($66.94) per person.
3. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The New York-inspired Black Lion Pub, located in the H Hotel, at One Sheikh Zayed Road - دبي - United Arab Emirates, is hosting an evening Thanksgiving brunch. The menu includes appetizers like roast squash soup or smoked duck pate, with entrees like turkey with cornbread and sausage stuffing or sweet potato bake. The cost of the brunch, with no alcoholic drinks, begins at Dhs250 ($68).
4. London, England
Covent Garden's The Big Easy, located at 12 Maiden Ln, London, was inspired by 19th century American crab shacks and BBQ huts. It may not scream Thanksgiving at first glance, but it does at least one day a year. And it attracts homesick Americans all year. The three-course meal costs £30 ($45) with a choice of either a pit-smoked turkey served with stuffing, cornbread, candied sweet potatoes and creamed spinach, or a lobster fest featuring whole lobster, lobster roll or lobster mac 'n cheese. If you fancy the lobster but feel guilty for not going the traditional route, then maybe we can consider it a pre-Christmas dinner?
5. Paris, France
[caption id="attachment_348306" align="alignnone" width="1024"] This is one-stop shopping for the American expat in Paris, France. (Thanksgiving)[/caption]
If you're in Paris, France and would like to host a Thanksgiving feast at home, we have the one-stop shop for you. The All-American grocery store called Thanksgiving, located at 20, rue Saint Paul, offers the comforts of home. You need a turkey? The shop has been supplying fresh turkeys during the fourth week of November for the past 26 years. Need some sides? The shop doesn't prepare the sides, but they have all the necessary ingredients for you to take home. You can find online shopping here.
While this is a sampling of Thanksgiving experiences happening worldwide, hopefully this starting point will be a motivator for those of you away from home to see what's going on in your new neighborhood.
Thanksgiving doesn't have to be spent eating a frozen turkey dinner, watching repeats of Sherlock on your laptop (that doesn't sound so bad, actually).
Will you be abroad over Thanksgiving? What are your plans!
