For the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of D-Day, the Queen and Prince Philip invited Bill and Hillary Clinton to dinner in Portsmouth and an overnight stay on the royal yacht Britannia. It was the first occasion during which the Queen had spent any length of time with the president. In his autobiography, Clinton wrote: “Her Majesty impressed me as someone who but for the circumstance of her birth, might have become a successful politician or diplomat. As it was, she had to be both, without quite seeming to be either.”
