Before he was elected, Jimmy Carter had met the Queen in Washington in 1976 when she was in the U.S. for the Bicentennial. In May 1977, Elizabeth was host to Carter on his first overseas trip at a dinner for NATO leaders at Buckingham Palace. He famously kissed the Queen Mother on the lips. “I took a sharp step backwards – not quite far enough,” the Queen Mum commented afterwards.
