His X-Men days may be over, but Nicholas Hoult has signed up for another high-profile movie franchise: Mission: Impossible.
The British actor confirmed his casting in the new Mission: Impossible movie on Instagram by responding to a post by writer-director Christopher McQuarrie.
After McQuarrie posted on Instagram, “Say, @nicholashoult, care to raise a little hell?,” Hoult replied: “Love to. Though why stop at a little?”
Hoult used the hashtag #MI78, which suggests he may appear in the next two Mission: Impossible movies, which McQuarrie is planning to shoot back-to-back. Hoult’s character has yet to be revealed, but Variety reports that, in classic Brit actor fashion, he’s signed up play a baddie who’ll cause trouble for Tom Cruise‘s Ethan Hunt.
Hoult is understood to have met with Cruise, who’s also a producer on the Mission: Impossible movies, to discuss a possible role in the upcoming Top Gun sequel. Miles Teller ultimately secured the part in question, but Hoult evidently made a positive impression and will now get to work with Cruise after all.
The seventh and eighth Mission: Impossible movies are scheduled for release on July 23, 2021 and August 5, 2022. Hayley Atwell and Avengers‘ Pom Klementieff have also been cast in one or both of the movies, which will be the third and fourth directed by McQuarrie following 2015’s Rogue Nation and 2018’s Fallout.
