Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) has signed on for a new project. She is set to take on the role of one of the strangers in the forthcoming series, Nine Perfect Strangers, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

She will be joining Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies), who is not one of the strangers, but a director of a wellness resort. Her role is to oversee the group and aid them in their attempt to find relief from city life.

The limited series will land over at Hulu and is based on Liane Moriarty‘s 2018 novel by the same name. Moriarty also wrote Big Little Lies, with Kidman starring in and executive-producing the TV adaptation for that novel, as well.

Like Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers is a drama. The nine strangers have signed up for a ten-day journey at Tranquillum House, led by their Russian leader Masha (Kidman). McCarthy is set to play a struggling romance novelist named Frances, who is recovering from a bad breakup after being catfished. According to the description, Frances becomes fixated on Masha and her mysterious ways.

It’s not hugely surprising to learn Masha is the center of attention, as that character was the first to be developed, with Kidman’s producing partner, Per Saari, saying, “Although we knew what the concept was, [Nine Perfect Strangers] was acquired more or less sight unseen. Liane was talking to Nicole about the seeds of a character and she embraced it instantly, so Liane ended up writing this extraordinary character for her.”

Big Little Lies writer and showrunner David E. Kelley will also be returning. The novel is set in Australia, but that’s not to say the TV series will be too. If you haven’t read the book and would like to learn more about the eight other strangers, this New York Times review of the novel gives a good summary.

There’s no start date as of yet, but that gives us time to ponder what’s to come… like, we keep flashing back to Kidman in Stepford Wives. Maybe the retreat-goers are replaced with robots?? Okay, probably not.

What’s your theory on what’s going to happen at the resort??
