Rising star George MacKay isn’t just heading up Sam Mendes‘s eagerly-anticipated war movie 1917; he’s also fronting True History of the Kelly Gang, an upcoming biographical western about iconic Australian bushranger and outlaw Ned Kelly.
The just-released trailer introduces us to MacKay’s Ned Kelly as well as Russell Crowe‘s Harry Power, a fellow bushranger who took the young Ned under his wing.
The movie’s impressive cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Charlie Hunnam, Game of Thrones‘ Essie Davis, and Leave No Trace‘s Thomasin McKenzie. They all appear in the intense and energetic trailer, which you can check out below.
Adapted from Peter Carey‘s novel of the same name, True History of the Kelly Gang is the latest movie from director Justin Kurzel (Snowturner, Assassin’s Creed). It’s due to open in theaters in 2020 at a date to be confirmed.
Ned Kelly, a Robin Hood-like figure who still polarizes opinion in Australia, is definitely a meaty role for MacKay. The 27-year-old British actor has already marked himself out as one to watch with acclaimed performances in the hit indie movies Captain Fantastic, Sunshine on Leith, and Pride.
Before True History of the Kelly Gang, we’ll see him in Sam Mendes’s 1917, which opens on December 25. We don’t know much about the epic war drama yet, other than that Mendes has assembled an awesome ensemble cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Mark Strong, and Game of Thrones‘ Dean-Charles Chapman. Bring it on.
