At last! It was just announced that A Discovery of Witches will be available to stream in the U.S. this coming January on Sundance Now and Shudder. The eight-part series, which stars Downton Abbey‘s Matthew Goode and Alex Kingston (Doctor Who), premiered last month in the U.K.
Over the weekend, a trailer for the show was released at New York Comic-Con. “Once the world was full of wonders. But, it belongs to humans now. We have all but disappeared,” says vampire Matthew Claremont (Goode):
Not all such creatures are gone, of course. Claremont meets a young woman, historian Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), who he recognizes as… a witch. The supernatural world forbids interspecies relationships, but it doesn’t look like Claremont will heed that law. In the clip above, the vamp and witch smooch at 1:42, and we suspect that’s just the start of things.
Their union, which takes place against a backdrop of modern-day Oxford accademia, may well result in war, but we’ll have to be patient to see how the story rolls out. As well, there’s still no footage featuring Doctor Who‘s Alex Kingston, who plays Sarah Bishop, Diana’s witch aunt.
The series is based on the acclaimed All Souls novels by Deborah Harkness and will premiere January 17, 2019.
