You’d be forgiven for assuming from our headline that Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project) will be hosting a late night show with Emma Thompson as a guest. Which would be a lot of fun, but that’s not the case.

Actually, Kaling has written a film called Late night, and will also star in it opposite Thompson, reports Variety.

Still fun!

Thompson will portray a TV personality whose late night show is struggling and in danger of being canceled. According to the movie’s description, she hires her first female writer (Kaling) to freshen up the stale show. Apparently, the new writer has a way about her and her magic touch spills over into the TV host’s personal life, too.

There are no details on how the new writer goes about it, but we’ve seen how Kaling’s semi-biographical character in The Mindy Project impacts everyone around her. So, we have confidence in this go-getter actress-writer to do it again on-screen.

In case you missed it, here’s Kaling in a Mindy Project promo, comparing her life to a Bourne movie:

While we’re not expecting another Mindy Project, we do expect great things to come from this interesting, talented woman. And, she has excellent taste, listing Bridget Jones’s Diary as her No. 1 favorite rom-com, Tweeting about her love for “Drunk Sherlock,” and taking on the difficult task of adapting Four Weddings and a Funeral for TV.

And now she’s cast one of our favorites, Emma Thompson, earning herself some serious Anglo points — not that anyone is keeping score. (We’re totally keeping score.)

Late Night is currently in development, with a premiere date yet to be announced, but we do know that Thompson’s co-stars will include John Lithgow (The Crown) and Hugh Dancy (Hannibal)

We recently saw Kaling in the sci-fi/fantasy film A Wrinkle in Time, opposite Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon. And Thompson is currently voicing Dr. Dolittle’s (Robert Downey, Jr.) parrot Polynesia in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.

What do you think of the on-screen pairing of Emma and Mindy?
