Toni Collette is an amazing actress (United States of Tara), and seems like a delightful person, but her character is kind of a jerk in the new film Madame.

Watch the first U.S. trailer below, which was released yesterday (February 12), and you’ll see what we mean.

Collette and Harvey Keitel play American expats living in Paris (hence “French-ish”), Anne and Bob Fredericks. The upper-class couple is set to host a dinner party, and, to the dismay of Mrs. Fredericks, the table is set for 13 people, which is entirely unacceptable. She believes the number to be unlucky. Of course, she can’t un-invite a guest, so at the last minute she asks one of her maids, Maria (Rossy de Palma), to be a seat filler.

Maria is advised not to talk too much… or, drink too much wine. She does indulge in some wine, which results in some chatting, and Maria winning the attention of the gent sitting next to her — a British art broker (Michael Smiley).

A love affair starts, but Mrs. Fredericks is having none of it:

We did warn you that Collette’s character has her nose up in the air. She set this course of action in motion when she asked Maria to play a role, and now she wants to ruin the resulting romance.

Madame has already premiered in France but this is the first glimpse we’ve had of footage here in the U.S., and the release date is yet to be announced.

We know Collette from her earlier work, like in the 1994 film Muriel’s Wedding and 2002’s About a Boy, where she starred opposite Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult, who played her son. You can also look for her in the forthcoming TV series, Wanderlust.

Rossy de Palma may look familiar if you know films like 1988’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,  1989’s Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! and 1994’s Ready to Wear. More recently, de Palma starred in the 2015 Spanish TV series Anciados, and you can also look for her in 2018’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.
