Sony’s long-awaited superhero movie Venom has finally started filming, according to a photo released last night (October 23).

Captioned “Day 1,” it shows a relaxed, chuckling Tom Hardy on set, with what looks like Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer in the background.

The Taboo and Dunkirk star plays antihero Venom, a.k.a. Eddie Brock, the first victim to fall prey to the so-called “Venom” parasite and former adversary of one Peter Parker. In fact, this isn’t first time the character has appeared on the big screen. The role was initially played by Topher Grace in 2007’s Spider-Man 3 — not to be confused with Spider-Man 1 and 2, the 2012 reboot featuring Andrew Garfield as the arachnoid one, or the recent Spider-Man outing starring Tom Holland.

Got it? Phew.

Tom (Hardy, that is) will be joined in the Venom ensemble by Riz Ahmed (Rogue One, The Night Of), Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea), Jenny Slate (Zootropolis), Reid Scott (Veep) and Scott Haze (Midnight Special), though which roles they’ll take is not yet known.

So, let’s recap: other than the title role, we don’t know who — or what — anyone will play. We also don’t know what the film’s about. But hey, it’s got Tom Hardy in it, and that’s good enough for us.

Venom is due to open in theaters on October 5, 2018.

Are you looking forward to seeing Tom in another superhero movie?
