We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again: when Helen Mirren speaks, people listen. A very tangible example of this was when the actress mentioned her desire to appear in the Fast and Furious franchise.
Mirren’s request made its way to FF star Vin Diesel… and, lo and behold, she was cast as the baddie in 2017’s The Fate of the Furious.
And it seems like that passing comment could have reset the trajectory of her career. Because now she’s set to take a lead role in another action movie, writer-director Luc Besson‘s (Lucy, The Fifth Element) Anna, reports Variety.
Mirren will be joined by other familiar faces, like her The Fate of the Furious co-star Luke Evans and Peaky Blinders‘ Cillian Murphy. The title role goes to newcomer Sasha Luss, who has only one film credit prior to being cast in Anna, and it’s also a Besson film: 2017’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
And while we know the name of this new movie, and that there’s character named Anna, the storyline is pretty tightly wrapped at this point in time. In fact, they’re not giving away anything, which makes us all the more curious.
We do know, however, that the folks making the film over at Lionsgate are pretty excited to be re-teaming with Besson having most recently collaborated on Valerian. “We are delighted to be reunited with Luc and his EuropaCorp team on another exciting, action-packed film featuring an A-list cast,” they said in a statement.
Production on the film begins this November with a release date still to be confirmed. We’ll let you know if any plot details come to light before then.
In the meantime, you can look for Mirren in 2018’s Winchester, Evans in this week’s release (October 13) of Professor Marston and the Wonder Women and Murphy can be spotted in Dunkirk, released this past summer (July 21), and still in theaters.
