Luther star Idris Elba might not be everyone’s perfect James Bond, but there’s one iconic role it looks like he’s nailed: The Gunslinger, aka Roland Deschain.

Roland features in Stephen King‘s magnum opus The Dark Tower, a series of novels that has finally made it to the big screen after multiple delays, false starts, and even concerns from fans that an adaptation wasn’t possible.

It’s an understandable fear. The Dark Tower comprises eight books and over 4,250 pages’ worth of text — not to mention numerous comic books and an online game. All this means that The Gunslinger and his adversary, The Man in Black — played in the upcoming film by Matthew McConaughey — have already been brought vividly to life.

So last year’s casting news was met with some trepidation. Could Idris and Matthew pull off such iconic characters? Well, by the looks of fan reactions to the trailer released last month, we’d say the answer is a resounding yes:

Although you can’t please everyone:

A new behind-the-scenes featurette released yesterday (June 26), however, features the reaction that really matters: that of The Gunslinger’s creator, Stephen King. And according to him, Idris has nailed it.

“When I started The Dark Tower, I really saw The Gunslinger as this concentrated force,” the author explained. “The Dark Tower has always been really important to me, so to see The Gunslinger come to life with Idris Elba was really incredible.”

Idris himself was also on hand to share his thoughts on his character:

The Dark Tower opens in theaters on August 4.

Does Idris match your idea of The Gunslinger too?
