Brace yourselves Sherlock fans. Andrew Scott, who plays the dastardly Professor James Moriarty in the fan favorite series, has revealed that we may have quite a wait before the next season. The actor chimed in on the show’s status when appearing on the U.K’s The One Show.

Scott’s character Moriarty is hard to keep track of — is he alive, dead, back from the dead, good, bad, returning? So while we may not trust his opinion, we’re totally open to any deets dropped by the Irish actor who plays him.

According to Scott, it sounds like a season five has been discussed, but it will be quite a while before it comes to the screen. “I don’t think there’s another series of Sherlock coming soon,” he told the RadioTimes. “I think another General Election would come first!” Typically, British general elections happen every five years, with the current one scheduled for tomorrow (June 8).

What?! We can’t wait FIVE YEARS.

Take a breath, people.

Scott went on to clarify: “We’re not doing [Sherlock] for another couple of years. Everybody got quite busy, you know? You want to keep it fresh and stuff like that.” Phew! Based on what we’ve seen already, two year is a typical hiatus between seasons.

And by “everyone,” he meant Benedict Cumberbatch who stars in the title role (and even earned himself the nickname “Busy Benedict”), Martin Freeman (Dr. John Watson), Louise Brealey who plays Molly Hooper, Mark Gatiss (co-creator and the actor who plays Sherlock’s brother Mycroft) and co-creator Steven Moffat… the list goes on.

So, OK. We’re going to be “glass half full” about this and cling to the news that there WILL be more Sherlock in our future. And it’s always nice to hear from Scott, one of our favorite cast members…

Honestly, we’ve even found ourselves rooting for his bad guy alter-ego Moriarty in the past

Ooh, here’s an idea for any TV execs who may be reading. How about a Moriarty spin-off? His wicked antics could definitely fill out a series. And talk about the perfect hiatus filler! It could almost make us forget that we’re missing Sherlock.

If you haven’t seen Moriarty in action recently, here’s a look back:

Which other Sherlock characters could hold their own in a spin-off?
