Transforming Dan Stevens into a beast always seemed to us like a difficult task, but new footage recently leaked from the set of Beauty and the Beast finally reveals how they did it.
The behind-the-scenes video features interviews with the stars and production crew of the live-action remake, who explain just what went into turning Downton Abbey‘s delightfully dapper Matthew Crawley into a towering, hairy, bison-like monster.
Not only that, but it also shows Dan on set, filming dance sequences and intimate scenes with co-star Emma Watson, all the while kitted out in a bulked-up motion capture suit, a tight-fitting helmet, and on stilts.
Needless to say the internet is having a field day.

According to Dan, the costume was an “ordeal,” if only for his “calf muscles alone.” And, as if spending the day dressed like the incredible Hulk in a weighty CGI suit wasn’t demanding enough, he then had to head to a separate studio every evening to capture his facial expressions.

Here’s the footage in full. And yes, it may show Dan’s, er, commitment to his craft, but if you ask us, it’s Emma’s ability to look lovingly into his face that marks her out as a complete pro.
