What’s a motion poster? Just what it sounds like: a poster that moves.

Stephen King‘s The Dark Tower series of novels is being adapted into a film (August 4), starring Anglophenia favorite Idris Elba (Luther) as Roland Deschain, The Gunslinger, and Matthew McConaughey as Walter O’Dim, aka, Randall Flagg, The Man in Black.

We’ve been covering this for about a year now, with King himself initially confirming the lead casting with a somewhat cryptic Tweet, writing, “The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed,” tagging the lead actors.

Now we have an official look at the actors in character. While it’s not quite footage, the posters do move a little bit — enough to grab our attention, at least. They also include some content foreshadowing the characters’ call to duty in the fantasy western epic.

Joining Elba and McConaughey is newcomer Nicholas Hamilton (It) as Lucas Hanson:

And, this is just the beginning. The trailer for the much-anticipated film is set to release tomorrow (May 3).

Update (May 2 at 1:17 PM EST): McConaughey just tweeted footage of his character, with Elba responding with his own footage as a response:

The Dark Tower will hit theaters on August 4, 2017.

In addition to the film, a follow-up TV series is also in the works, with Elba returning as The Gunslinger. Rather than trying to fit all of the material into one film, which spanned eight novels and was also adapted into comics by Marvel, the TV show will help tell the story, starting with the fourth novel, Wizards and Glass. The start date has yet to be confirmed.
