Sacha Dhawan isn’t yet a household name in the U.S., but he will be soon thanks to his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch.
Sacha recently told RadioTimes.com that Doctor Strange himself put a good word in for him, when he was in the running for the role of super-villain Davos in Iron Fist.
“When I was on Sherlock, I was in the midst of auditioning for Marvel,” he explained. “We had a huge fight scene that took about three days to shoot [and involved a swimming pool]. And obviously in between takes where they’re setting up, me and Benedict would be sitting in a warm tent in absolutely soaking clothes. We had lots of time so we’d just chat and stuff. And I knew he’d done Doctor Strange, and he was asking ‘Oh, what are you doing next?’
“And I said, ‘Actually Benedict I’m testing tomorrow for Iron Fist,’ and he went ‘Oh right, ok, great!’ And then pulled out his phone and started typing away on his phone. And I thought ‘that’s a bit rude!’ And he went, ‘By the way, I’m just emailing a contact at Marvel.’
“And I went ‘Oh!’. And he went ‘yeah yeah, I’ve put a good word in for you.’ And I said ‘Oh no, no, you don’t have to do that!’ and he went, ‘No, it’s my pleasure, I love working with you.'”
Aww. Obviously we’re not suggesting that Sacha only got the role because of Benedict, as he’s a fantastic actor in his own right. Anglo readers will already know him from recent Sherlock episode “The Six Thatchers,” in which he played the secret agent Ajay, as well as his appearances in 24: Live Another Day and Outsourced, not to mention his breakthrough role in Alan Bennett‘s The History Boys.
That said, and given the interconnected nature of the MCU, it’s nice to think that actors who are already part of the Marvel family would have some sway when it comes to bringing new actors into the fold.
It’s fair to say that Sacha’s Iron Fist character is his biggest to date. He plays Davos, the friend and eventual nemesis of Danny Rand, aka the Iron Fist (Finn Jones). Whether or not his alter ego of the Steel Serpent will materialize in the second season is unconfirmed, which is fair enough, given the first season only premiered on Netflix last Friday (17 March).
Sacha isn’t the only other actor on the Sherlock set with a Marvel contract to their name, either. Martin Freeman has also popped up in Captain America: Civil War as government official Everett Ross, and is due to have a much bigger role in Black Panther due out next year.
Perhaps he also has Benedict to thank? A good word from him is bound to open doors.
