Doctor Who fans have watched Gugu Mbatha-Raw‘s star enjoy a rapid ascent in the ten years since her stint as Tish Jones.

Having been shortlisted for the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2015, she’s impressed with roles in BelleBeyond the LightsJupiter Ascending, and last year’s Free State of Jones alongside Matthew McConaughey.

Her 2017 is shaping up to be even bigger than that. Not only does she have a part in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, the third installment of the Cloverfield franchise, The God Particle, and the upcoming adaptation of children’s classic A Wrinkle in Time, but there are even rumors she’s been cast in Episode VIII, the next as-yet-unnamed Star Wars movie.

Hitting the big time doesn’t mean she’s forgotten her sci-fi roots, however. Just last year she popped up in fan favorite Black Mirror episode “San Junipero,” and now, according to Variety, she’s set to play a super human in new thriller Fast Color.

We don’t know exactly what her character’s super abilities will be, but whatever they are, she’s forced to go on the run when they are discovered. Nor will it be your average superhero movie, as it’s written and directed by Julia Hart, the filmmaker behind last year’s festival hit Miss Stevens.

What we do know is Gugu’s character is a woman called Ruth, who, having abandoned her family years ago, has nowhere left to hide except home.

“This is exactly the kind of movie I want to see in the theater – three generations of strong women finding their power,” said Mickey Liddell, one of the producers behind the film who’s also responsible for Jackie, when talking to Variety. “Gugu and Julia are extraordinary talents and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with them both on this special project.”

We think this one has got all the ingredients for a fascinating film, and will see Gugu take center stage for the first time since 2014’s Belle.

Fast Color is predicted to have a 2018 release date.
