From Gandalf and Magneto, to a lovesick vampire and an aging Sherlock HolmesSir Ian McKellen has played some iconic roles in his career, but his next might be his most challenging yet.

Who could it be?, we hear you ask. Hamlet? King Lear? Macbeth? Nope. (He’s played them all already, of course.)

The ever gracious knight is set to play himself: Variety is reporting McKellen will be be the subject of a new documentary titled McKellen: Playing the Part.

Filmmaker Joe Stephenson has already filmed over 14 hours of footage with the renowned British actor as he reflected on a long and illustrious career. In a statement, Stephenson explained the film will celebrate not just his achievements, but the “man himself”:

“To a whole generation of cinema-goers Ian is known as Gandalf and Magneto, but here is an opportunity to show them his incredible, and inspiring trajectory from his modest childhood in the north of England to Tony-winning star of the stage, from one of the first actors to speak openly about his sexuality to becoming an internationally recognized two-time Oscar nominee.”

As well as the new interview footage, the documentary will feature never-before-seen material from McKellen’s early film and theater performances, as well as the actor’s personal photography.

Hear, hear, we say; and here’s to many more years to come.
