Last week we told you about The Current War, a new film starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon as electricity pioneers Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse respectively, and a few people wondered in the comments if Nikola Tesla will also feature.
Tesla was the maverick engineer and inventor whose huge contribution to the development of electricity has often been overlooked, making him a frequent subject of stories on the big screen.
A rather fantastical version of him was played by the frankly rather fantastic David Bowie in Christopher Nolan‘s The Prestige, for instance:
Now THAT is what we call an entrance.
We need wonder no more, it seems. Yesterday (October 4) Variety confirmed that Tesla will feature in The Current War, and, if current talks proceed as planned (geddit? “current” talks?), he’ll be played by X-Men star Nicholas Hoult.
This won’t be Nicholas’ first time playing a major real-life historical figure either (and no, we don’t mean Beast), as he’s just wrapped filming Rebel in The Rye, a J.D. Salinger biopic in which he stars as the famed author.
It’s another feather in Nic’s cap and another impressive attack from The Current War in its battle with Eddie Redmayne vehicle The Last Days of Night, a rival film also vying to portray the competition between Edison and Westinghouse.
Will Tesla feature in that one? And if he does, who will play him? One thing is clear: It’s your move, Eddie.Read More
