Before there was The Late Late Show and Carpool Karaoke, there was Gavin and Stacey, which James Corden co-wrote and starred in. The series aired from 2007 through 2010.

But, we should remember, Corden had been a working actor since 1996.

In 1995, prior to his first on-air acting credit, Corden sat down with singer and actor Meat Loaf, as a “Young Good Morning Showbiz Reporter” helping out with interviews for the show Good Morning with Anne and Nick.

The BBC recently released the interview to celebrate Corden’s 38th birthday, which was just yesterday (August 22).

He looks like James Corden in the below video. He sounds like James Corden. He is James Corden … but, a very, very young version of himself.

Corden’s questions are very thoughtful. He clearly showed up prepared. But, with such idealistic ideas, like, “Do you prefer performing or all the promotional side of things, is that what you really love?” it does illustrate his youthfulness.

(Without hearing Meat Loaf’s answer, we knew it would be the former. You’ll know what we mean when you see his response in the below.)
