Tom Hardy and Olivia Colman in a musical? Why yes, yes they are. They appear in the film London Road, which was released to wide acclaim in the U.K. last year and is finally coming to select U.S. cinemas this September. and Information on screenings is now available.
This isn’t your average movie musical: It is based on interviews with real-life inhabitants of a small-town English neighborhood impacted by brutal serial murders in 2006. The recordings of the interviews became a National Theatre stage production, which was adapted into the film. The result is “an utterly gripping, macabre but finally very moving cine-opera in a reportage verbatim style,” wrote The Guardian‘s Peter Bradshaw in his review last year.
Colman plays Julie, a resident who helps to lead the neighborhood back from the brink of hysteria, and Hardy has a small but pivotal role as Mark, a suspicious cab driver who has frightening insight into the minds of serial killers. Both get a chance to show off their pipes. They are part of a large ensemble cast, many of whom were part of the stage production:
Here’s a preview of Hardy’s performance as the taxi driver. There’s a bit of Travis Bickle here, isn’t there?
