We’ve always felt Peaky Blinders and Penny Dreadful star Helen McCrory deserves more recognition, and today’s news (August 16) means she might finally be about to get it. According to Deadline, she’s set to take the lead role in a new six-part legal thriller already being likened to Prime Suspect.

Fearless will be written by Patrick Harbinson, who wrote Homeland starring Helen’s real-life husband Damian Lewis, and whose credits also include 24 and Person Of Interest.

He explained: “Much of the work I’ve done in America in the last 10 years has been about life in the post 9/11 (and post 7/7) world. The so-called War on Terror has put serious stress on the ordinary workings of the law. National security justifies all sorts of police and state over-reach—and the great majority of us are prepared to accept this. So I wanted to create a character who challenges these assumptions, who fights for those outside the normal run of society, and who is uncompromising, difficult and completely indifferent to unpopularity and danger.”

Step forward lawyer Emma Blunt (McCrory), a “complex and contradictory character” who investigates the killing of a schoolgirl while trying to free the man she thinks was wrongly convicted. She soon discovers powerful forces both at home and abroad that are determined to stop her uncovering the truth.

Well, this strategy certainly worked for hubby Damian, and it brought a whole new lease on life to Claire Danes‘ career. And writer Patrick says he’s particularly thrilled with her casting: “I am incredibly lucky to have someone of Helen’s wit, warmth and intelligence bringing [Emma] to life”.

So all in all we say: go for it, Helen!
