There’s been speculation about the sequel to the 1996 cult classic, but now it’s official: Trainspotting 2 starts filming today (May 16) and will open in theaters on January 27, 2017.

A new teaser trailer released over the weekend broke the news, and while it doesn’t reveal any new footage, it does feature a new take on that famous monologue by Ewan McGregor. And for a moment at least, it seems like his character Renton and pals might have finally cleaned up their lives:

Yeah, right. Referred to simply as T2, the movie is expected to be loosely based on Irvine Welsh‘s novel Porno, the Scottish author’s 2002 followup to his 1993 tale of Edinburgh heroin addicts.

In it, Renton (Ewan McGregor) returns to Scotland after several years as a nightclub owner in Amsterdam, having ripped off his former associates Sick Boy (Hackers‘ Jonny Lee Miller), Begbie (The Full Monty‘s Robert Carlyle) and Spud (Ewen Bremner, Black Hawk Down) following the foursome’s drug deal in the original Trainspotting. All four reunite in a pornography venture, with Renton doing his best to stay out of Begbie’s way and avoid a violent confrontation.

“Clean living”? Not so much. The original 1996 movie proved a launching pad for its cast and director Danny Boyle, who has since gone on to make movies such as The Beach, Slumdog Millionaire and Steve Jobs. Not only that, but the famous opening scene and its inclusion of the track “Lust for Life” led to the resurrection of Iggy Pop’s career and the “Choose life” poster adorning a thousand college dorm rooms in the 1990s.

We’ll have to wait for the sequel to see if the poster becomes a favorite among the class of 2017.
