Madonna performed a tribute to Prince last night (May 22) at the Billboard Awards, and not everyone was best pleased.

Before she’d even sung a note, and despite the fact she duetted on “Love Song” with the Purple One in 1989 and the pair even dated, the choice of artist angered some fans, with some going so far as to raise a petition demanding other artists be considered:

Controversy is Madge’s middle name, however. After a moving introduction from Questlove, the Material Girl appeared on stage in a majestic revolving purple throne to the sound of “Let’s Go Crazy,” before launching into “Nothing Compares 2 U,” the track penned by Prince but made famous in 1990 by Sinead O’Connor.

Then Stevie Wonder, wearing a purple scarf, joined her on stage for a rendition of “Purple Rain” that got a standing ovation from the audience in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Some on Twitter agreed:

That wasn’t enough for some fans though. Just over a month since the singer’s sudden death, they brought their best gif game, and it was good:

Quickly it became obvious that if there was one overall winner on the night, it was Prince’s “not impressed” face.

And then BET got in on the act, throwing some well-timed shade. Just moments after Madonna’s performance aired, they posted THIS to advertise their own tribute show:

Questlove came to her aid, defending her performance in a series of tweets that acknowledged how hard it’s been to process Prince’s death, leading some people to have too-high expectations:

Madonna, on the other hand, needed no defense. Proving she’s hard as nails, she ignored the criticism and posted her own tribute a few hours later:

Clearly, you’re gonna need more than that if you want to upset Madonna.
