Get ready to forget everything you think you know. The first Doctor Strange teaser trailer is here, and it’s got more than a few surprises.

Until now little was known about what form the movie adaptation of the original Marvel comics would take. We knew some of the key players (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Mads Mikkelsen, not to mention in the lead role a little-known actor by the name of Benedict Cumberbatch) and had been treated to a few glimpses of filming on the streets of New York and London.

All that changed last night (April 12) when the trailer was released during Jimmy Kimmel Live. It gives us an intriguing insight into director Scott Derrickson’s experimental take on Stephen Strange’s journey from surgeon to sorcerer, showing how Strange, having set out on a journey of healing after a car accident ruins his career as a neurosurgeon, encounters the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who becomes his mentor in the mystic arts. There follows a series of kaleidoscopic, world-bending scenes reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

The surprises don’t end there either. Not only does the clip feature the sight of Benedict with a full-on beard, a la Tom Hanks in 2000’s Cast Away (or, let’s face it, any guy in a coffee shop in Williamsburg right about now), we also get to hear his take on an American accent. Sherlock fans, brace yourselves; his throaty U.S. drawl starts at 0:55.

And if you thought Tilda Swinton was nearly unrecognizable in that wig in Trainwreck, then get a load of her hairdo in this:

Excited much? Doctor Strange opens in theaters this November 4.
