Suspense is second nature to the makers of Sherlock, so it’s no surprise they’ve been keeping us in the dark about the new season.

Just last week Mark Gatiss teased us with a photo of a familiar prop on Sherlock’s mantelpiece (surely that means they’re on set right now, surely?), and then Amanda Abbington was at it, tweeting a corner of her script and causing fans to go into spoilertastic #setlock mode (warning: do not click on that Twitter link if you don’t want to see blurry location pics, read half-heard lines or hear about possible sightings of the catering lady).

But finally, it’s official: three new episodes of the detective series are in production. In a statement released today (April 6), the BBC confirmed the new season will feature Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) back in the U.K. with Doctor Watson (Martin Freeman), while he and his wife Mary prepare to become parents.

Previous experience means we’re not holding our breath, however, and sure enough, showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss also hint that “ghosts of the past” haunt them, bringing adventure, terror and romance in a story “about to reach its climax”.

Duh-duh-duh! Benedict himself took a break from gallivanting around New York in unusual garb to get in on the act of being a big ol’ tease. He was quoted as saying: “I can’t wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait… though not for long… And it will be worth it.”

Oh Benny, you rotter.

Still no official word on a premiere date for Season Four.

In the mean time though, fan of the show John Smith has given up waiting and put together a trailer of his own, using impressive visual effects and some of Moriarty’s most sinister lines to tease the new season.

It makes us wonder if we should bother waiting for the pros to finish – at this rate we could make a whole season ourselves. We’re sure we’ve got a big coat lying around somewhere…
