In preparation for the final part of Peter Jackson’s Tolkien trilogy—The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, which will hit cinemas on December 17—the multi-disc release of part two is imminent, and with it comes some particularly glorious extras.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug comes out on November 4, and the Blu-ray 3D has 25 minutes of extra footage and 9 hours of special features.
This clip is clearly not meant for broadcast within the final film, but it does show Benedict Cumberbatch performing in character as Smaug, but shorn of all the special effects that turn him from a man with strategic spots all over his face into an actual talking dragon.
The voice endures, of course. And with all that purring it’s pretty clear he’ll be a fantastic Shere Khan when his live-action remake of The Jungle Book comes out.
