It’s one of our most frequently asked questions: when’s Anglo Fan Favorites coming back? The wait is almost over: the tournament returns November 1.
If you’re unfamiliar, here’s how it works: we pit beloved British celebrities, in tournaments of 32 men and 32 women, against each other, and each week, you’ll vote for the winners in a set of matchups, whittling down the fields until there is one man and one woman standing, the British Man and Woman of 2014.
We’re celebrating our fourth annual tournament this year. It seemed not so long ago when Alan Rickman, fresh off his run as Severus Snape, took out Colin Firth to claim the inaugural men’s title, with his Harry Potter co-star Helena Bonham Carter prevailing over JK Rowling, the novelist behind the film series.
2012 saw the astonishing rise of Tom Hiddleston, as he outgunned Benedict Cumberbatch for that year’s title. Meanwhile, Irish Merlin star Katie McGrath came through with a paper-thin win over defending champion Bonham Carter.
And 2013 was our biggest year yet, with Hiddleston becoming the only repeat winner so far with a victory over 2011 champ Rickman, while a resurgent Alex Kingston handily trounced Dame Maggie Smith.
Now we’re in our fourth year, and the tournament is bigger than ever. Keep an eye on the blog, as we’ll be revealing this year’s men’s contenders before November 1. (The women’s competitors will be announced closer to the start of the women’s tournament on November 28.) But rest assured, Hiddlestoners and Kinglets: Hiddleston and Kingston will be back this year to defend their titles. But which feisty upstarts and mighty veterans will try and dethrone them? Could this finally be the year of Cumberbatch? Can Karen Gillan, buoyed by Guardians of the Galaxy and sitcom success, return to defeat her Doctor Who daughter?
As usual, the choice is yours.
