Not granny’s little girl: Gemma Arterton in ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’

Gemma Arterton’s fairy tale won’t get its happy ending until early next year, and even then nothing is for sure.

The sexy British actress, who was featured in the last James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, and has since starred in Clash of the Titans, Tamara Drewe and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Times, will play the title female role in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters when the adventure film opens on Jan. 11.

A newly released trailer promises Arterton looking simultaneously tough and fetching in black leather and lots of chills, thrills and action:

Originally scheduled to open last March, the movie shows how the German fairy tale’s young, imprisoned siblings have, as adults, transformed themselves into butt-kicking, wisecracking witch killers. Last year, Arterton told Entertainment Weekly that the movie is “very, very dark, and bloodthirsty and there’s a lot of cursing. It’s kind of got a [Quentin] Tarantino feel, really.”

Hansel & Gretel is directed by Norway’s Tommy Wirkola, who is best known for Dead Snow (2009), a Norwegian comic horror film about long-dormant Nazi zombies who rise up to attack a group of young friends on a skiing vacation.
