4. The BT Artbox

Dial A for ArtBox. (BT ArtBox)

“Experts call it the K6,” says the website for the BT Artbox. “We call it a red phone box.” The British phone booth was designed for King George V’s Silver Jubilee, but it now lives on as one of the UK’s enduring icons. The Artbox project, sponsored by British Telecom, has invited contemporary artists to reimagine the K6, and its placed the results all over London. Later, they’ll be auctioned off for charity. Take a look at some of the booths here. And you can even design your own here.

The bright red booths are still in use throughout the UK and you can find them in Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar. But if you can’t make it that far, there are some in the U.S. The British Embassy in Washington DC placed one outside of its building, and there are several in Orlando, Florida. But you can also find them in Norman, Oklahoma; Glenview, Illinois; Oxford, Mississippi, and other American towns.
