Rhys Ifans in 'Anonymous'

Deadline has shared the new trailer for Anonymous, the forthcoming Roland Emmerich-directed period drama, which explores the idea that William Shakespeare‘s beloved plays may have been written by someone else (Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford), while also tying in some of the political commotion surrounding the end of the Elizabethan era.

Anonymous features a fantastic cast, including Welsh-born actor Rhys Ifans as de Vere, London-born Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Elizabeth I, and her daughter, actress Joely Richardson as a younger Elizabeth. David Thewlis, who plays Professor Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter movies, plays the Queen’s chief advisor, William Cecil, and English thespian Derek Jacobi narrates the film. It opens nationwide on September 30.
