  • UK theatre newspaper The Stage did an interview with Torchwood star John Barrowman in which he discussed the plight of gay actors. He was quoted as saying, “I don’t think sexuality matters at all. I am proving that with what I am doing, as are others, like Graham Norton and Paul O’Grady. I know people who lie about being gay because they think it will affect their work chances. And that is just sad.” Many news outlets took that as Barrowman calling all closeted actors sad. The Stage’s Scott Matthewman wants to clear it all up: “There is a huge difference between describing a situation as sad, and describing people who feel they are in that situation as “sad”, as the reports have done. The former (which John talked about) is sympathetic, the latter (which he did not) is accusatory.”
