Here’s the problem, I’m just not excited for US Top Gear. I dont want the American version, I want the original. I remember when it was on TLC (Wednesdays @9:00 p.m. central time) and they would cut out the star in the reasonably priced car, and it was perfect. Anyone agree?
I’ll settle for both, but if I had to choose between the two. I’ll take the UK any day.
+1
I just get the feeling they’re going to cater to what they think the typical American would like - Mustang’s, Corvettes, and…trucks. I like none of those things. And TG UK doesn’t really feature them much, which is nice. One of the reasons why I watch TG UK is to learn about cars that aren’t for sale over here.
HOWEVER: I am very impressed with the amount of effort the BBC is putting into expanding TG to specific regions. So I’m really excited about TG USA, and I can’t wait to see it.
Agreed, I do not want a U.S. Top Gear. I feel that Adam Corolla is a very funny comedian, I used to love him on the man show, but him and Tanner Foust are not the two people we need to run a U.S. version of Top Gear. Tanner Foust is a good driver, but he is a bit of a wussy. I think Travis Pastrana and Jay Leno would have been a better combo if they really wanted to make a successful U.S. version.
Let’s be honest. The U.S. version will have every celebrity “car guy” chomping at the bit,Yet this is a show for us “regular guys”.I don’t want to see some overpayed glam getting the experience that others would do for scale-hell most of us would do it for free just load us up with some suds and cheese doodles
with a set of keys .that would pretty much do it for me.
What would be cool, really cool would be the two casts, two identical tracks and see just how different the Euro models and the US stack up against each other, maybe certain challenges thrown out to see who does best,And get some of our celebs in (like goldberg, lenno Etc.)to drive our moderately priced car.
Besides the last ferrari i drove was over 20 years ago when i was 18.(for ten very slow minutes)the celebs.probably just yesterday picked up their kids from school in their Lambo .
For transition purposes i would run the UK cast then introduce “THE YANKS”,In a annual “cannonball"rally, each year a different continent.
yeah, I would really like to have an American version of Top Gear, but seeing as how we take anything British and make it suck, I just don’t see it living up to the British version, which is unfortunate because there is so much potential. Someone will fuck it up.
Well, hopefully now that Top Gear is on itunes, we wont have to complain too much for the inconvienence. Can anyone think of a better US cast, except for Jeremy, James and Richard obviously? I would say Mike Rowe (From dirty jobs, I have nooo idea if he even has any clue about cars, but atleast hes interesting), Jay Leno (as long as he doesnt rant on about prestige and steam), and someone who will just break everything and push the cars way too hard (Jesse James?) I cant realy think of a 3rd.
PLEASE don’t ruin a perfectly good source of automotive entertainment! Making an Americanized version that satisfies the “government nanny” and holds true to the original will be exceptionally difficult.
All I want is access to past seasons of TOP GEAR either via DVD or iTunes.
The British/European view of the automotive world is through Jeremy, Richard and James is the life blood of the show.
If a network wishes to attempt a copy, call it something else. No American network will allow excellent features such as the Mercedes vs. ferry adventure in all of its politically incorrect glory.
We don’t have anything like top gear here in the US and it would be nice to have. I will most likely still watch both shows. Tanner Foust is a little “squirley” but he is an awesome driver check out his Ferrari test drives and his drift racing videos. http://formulad.com/drivers/
The US topgear would be good if they dont have any “celibrity” hosts who dont know a thing about cars. They should have like tryouts or something and im sure u would find a good host… i think thats how Richard Hammond and Clarkson became the hosts
And wouldnt Mike Rowe be a good Top Gear Host?
I very much enjoy the UK show, but I’m going to at least give the US version a good chance to shine before I whip out the willy and pee all over it. Give it a chance, it might actually be good.
Somehow I doubt they’d ever be wanting for presenters…I’d suffer enormously for the chance myself.
I really like the sexy camera angles and beautiful car “porn” that the British show uses. That, along with the amazing cars they get to drive and the celeb in a reasonably priced car segment make a great show to watch. I’m scared that the American show is going to be an infomercial for dull American cars. I see them on the highway every day; I don’t really care wonderful the Chrysler Sebring is. If it’s crap, TG America should say so and advertisers be damned. If they have a problem, make a better car.
On another note, it would be nice to hear the cars talked about in dollars rather than pounds.
All I know is that if they only have Camaro’s, Mustangs, Corvettes, Challengers and Pickups on the show…I won’t bother tuning in.
If they ever have one of those annoying buzz bomb tuners with gawdy graphics running down the sides and a driver with his hat on sideways and bling around his neck… I’ll probably ban the show entirely from the TV.
Top Gear is a UK show, with UK hosts, largely UK celebrity guests, which reviews cars (in most cases) which are available in the UK. Why bother to try and Americanize it? It’s entertaining because it’s a UK product. It is BBC America, isn’t it? Isn’t it supposed to be our feed for things Brit? We can get up to speed on stuff that we don’t understand, we don’t need babying or coddling. Leave Top Gear uncut and unchanged. I understand there is an issue as to copyright use of music used on the UK show, since BBC has scope to use music in the UK which it doesn’t outside - so, fine - change the soundtrack as needed, but nothing else, please! Don’t mess with success - not needed!!
