The end is near for Lord Darcy and Robert Aske, who remain in prison for treason. Charles Brandon is forced to continue the merciless persecution of the Northern rebels on behalf of King Henry, but it disturbs him so much that he turns to prayer.
Threat to Henry’s reign also arises abroad in the form of Cardinal Reginald Pole (Mark Hildreth), an English Catholic living in France and the Pope’s representative to Emperor Charles. He has written a pamphlet condemning Henry as a heretic and an adulterer. Henry orders Sir Francis Bryan to go to Paris and request that the French king hand over Pole or face a revival of hostilities between the two nations.
Meanwhile, Henry makes grand preparations to celebrate the imminent birth of a male heir to the throne, but a deeply personal blow is about to disturb the peace at court.
