Any creature from the future is, of course, pure speculation—but the look and shape of the Mer creature is part seal or walrus, and part mandrill or baboon. This beast is based on the idea that, in a drier world, primates may have taken to the water to feed, but slept, mated, and gave birth on the shore. In the show, Cutter jokes that that might be the future for humans. But were that to happen, many other primate species will have beat us to it. One example: the crab-eating macaques that already live among the mangroves and feed in the water.
Recruited by Philip as a new assistant in his experimental research lab, at first glance April is like a female Connor—scientifically minded but fiercely loyal to Philip.
