Giganotosaurus (“giant southern lizard”) was, as its name suggests, enormous&mdsah;and larger than “Tyrannosaurus Rex.” Only discovered recently (1994) in South America, Giganotosaurus lived in the mid-Cretaceous Period (about 93-89 million years ago) and was distantly related to the Jurassic “Allosaurs.” At that time, the continent supported herds of giant herbivores called the “Titanosaurids.” Some scientists speculate that Giganotosaurus evolved to bring down these huge animals.
