At almost 20 feet long, Arthropleura looks like a giant centipede. Easily provoked to attack, it has two enormous jaws which can inject lethal venom into its victim. This critter’s origins are based upon a real group of animals called the arthropleurids, which were most closely related to today’s centipedes and millipedes. Their fossils—some over 10 feet long—look a bit like giant wood lice. Scientists have yet to find the head of one of these creatures, which unlike their CG “cousins” are thought to have been harmless detritus eaters.
