People think of Fiji as a tropical paradise, which it is, but I was lucky enough to see a part of the country that had been untouched by any hotelier. The native Fijians were by far the most happy and welcoming people I have ever encountered. They were genuinely excited to teach us about their culture and ways of life.
One of the most interesting things I learned from our female guide was how undefined gender roles are in Fijian culture. Women do a lot of the hunting and foraging, and they seem to genuinely enjoy these tasks. It was very different from traditional Western culture where men usually do those types of jobs.
