1908 London Olympic Games

Three teams competed in the 1908 Olympic polo tournament, two English and one Irish, all representing the British Olympic Association. Team Roehampton competitors Charles Miller, George Miller, Patteson Nickalls, and Herbert Wilson of Great Britain won gold.

In the 1908 Olympic women's archery contest, 53-year-old Sybil Newall won gold. To this day, Newall remains the oldest woman to ever win an Olympic medal.

British rower Alexander McCulloch took silver in the single sculls at the 1908 Olympics.

Competing for Great Britain, Olympian Dennis Horgan took the silver medal in the shot put.

British track cycling racer Vic Johnson won gold, and went on to set three cycling world records the following year.

The White City Stadium in London housed the 1908 Olympic Games, and could seat 68,000 spectators. The stadium was demolished in 1985, and is now the site of BBC Media Village.

Madge Syers and her husband Edgar Syers won the 1908 Olmypic bronze medal for pairs skating. Six years prior, Syers became the first woman to compete at the World Skating Championships, taking silver in the previously all-male event.

Great Britain's Timothy Ahearne made an impressive showing in the triple jump. After his Olympic win, Ahearne emigrated to New York and joined the Irish American Athletic Club.

Dorothea Lambert-Chambers played Dora Boothby in the Ladies' Singles tennis final. After her gold medal win, Lambert-Chambers went on to publish "Tennis for Ladies" in 1910, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1981.

The 1908 Olympic Games marked the first olympic football contest. Eight teams entered the tournament at Shepherds Bush, and Great Britain won gold.
