Helen’s birthday is coming up (a fact that her wall calendar practically yells), and to her disappointment Alex says he has an out-of-town work commitment that day. But this is a lie intended to cover up the fact that he’s actually planning a surprise party for her with the help of Sophie, Pete’s sister. Alex realizes he wants a future with Helen, and he prepares to bare his soul to her… but the obstacles at the party just keep piling up: an antagonistic Sophie, an egotistical, salsa-loving client, the effects of alcohol, and his own knack for bad luck.
To Alex it seems like life has it in for him. He’s been sleeping in his office since his recent divorce, remains the butt of his boss’ jokes and can’t stop thinking about his co-worker Helen since their one-night stand.
