The Doctor is an alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels through all of time and space in his TARDIS. His current travel companion is Clara Oswald, though he has a long list of friends and companions who have shared journeys with him. Instead of dying, the Doctor is able to “regenerate” into a new body, taking on a new personality with each regeneration. Eleven actors, plus John Hurt, have played the Doctor thus far.
The Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, will make his first appearance in this year’s Christmas special, succeeding Matt Smith in the role. “The Time of the Doctor” premieres December 25 at 9/8c on BBC AMERICA.
On November 23, 2013, in a record-breaking global simulcast, 94 countries across 6 continents tuned in to watch the 50th Anniversary Special “The Day of the Doctor,” in which triple Doctors (the Eleventh Doctor, the Tenth Doctor and the War Doctor) battled Zygons and Daleks and tried to save Gallifrey from the ravages of the Time War.
Also included in the 50th Anniversary festivities was the premiere of An Adventure in Space and Time, a docudrama by Mark Gatiss about the genesis of Doctor Who.
