Haverford plans to buy the A.M.E. Zion Episcopal Church, but Morehouse convinces Elizabeth to buy the church behind her husband's back.

Winfred Haverford finds himself entangled with Norbert Morehouse's scheme to purchase Five Points and eradicate the immigrant population.

When Kevin asks if he can hide Annie at the convent, an exasperated Sister Agnes Clare tells Corcoran, "You were a troublesome child and you’ve become a troublesome adult.”

O'Brien and Maguire tell Reilly to get lost... or else.

Maguire and O'Brien take Mr. Reilly to visit Kate's grave, then confront him about the true nature of his relationship with Annie.

“I hope you’re aware by now that I am not some dull-witted debutant," Elizabeth tells Morehouse.

“I find that the Irish – at least the women – to be deeply committed to their faith," Elizabeth muses. "And yet, despite our efforts, the men remain to be uneducated, superstitious, violent…” But Morehouse believes there are men of their own class who are far worse.

The tension is thick between Corcoran and Haverford, who Corcoran believes should hang for his crimes.

A drunk Morehouse antagonizes Winfred Haverford.

Looks as though Molly has her eyes on Detective Corcoran.

How is Corcoran able to sniff out a liar? He studies the eyes. Relaxed eyes spell out a man's innocence. "Confession," he tells Maguire, "is good for the soul."

Molly vows to do whatever is necessary to protect Annie.

Doctor Matthew Freeman comes to Corcoran's aid, splinting his fractured leg.

Detective Andrew O'Brien isn't above a little trash talk. "I'll put a slug in your head and have Chang the Chinaman cut up your privates for chop suey."

Corcoran's on the warpath to find those responsible for his daughter's death and his wife's disappearance.

“You’re a smart one Corky," says the Sergeant. "You really do remind me of my dead brother.”

Sergeant Padraic Byrnes visits Corcoran's house, convinced the Detective orchestrated the deaths of Winfred Haverford and Madam Pompadou.

Morehouse cautions Corcoran, "The war will be over soon. Then, the world will be full of bright promises... and the city of New York will lead the way. In promises, and in dangers as well. You me - and our friend Matthew Freeman - we three must tread carefully. Our lives depend on our finesse."

In a morphine-induced haze, Corcoran has a vision of his deceased daughter, Maggie.

Annie begs Corcoran to protect her, horrified at the prospect of returning home with Mr. Reilly.

Annie recounts the sordid tale of marrying Reilly when she was just ten years old.

Annie reveals that Mr. Reilly is not her father, as he claims. Reilly is her husband.

Having nowhere to run, Annie nervously awaits a visit from Winfred Haverford.

The cruel and calculating Madam Pompadou is thrilled to have Annie in her clutches.

Molly Stuart brings Annie to Pompadou's Bordello, whispering to the girl, "You're quite the beauty, and I'm quite the jealous bitch."

A broken and bruised Corcoran catches a smoke and some couch time.

McClarty may be a "lyin' sack of manure," but Corcoran believes he had nothing to do with his wife's disappearance and his daughter's death.

Corcoran questions McClarty, demanding to know the whereabouts of his missing wife and the circumstances surrounding his daughter's death.

Corky keeps a weary lookout for men visiting to inquire about Annie's whereabouts.

Sara Freeman arms herself against the strange intruder in her home.

Detective Francis convinces Sara that he means no harm.

Doctor Matthew agrees to help the wounded Corky.

Detective Francis Maguire visits Carmansville to find Doctor Matthew Freeman - the only Doctor Corky trusts to fix his fractured leg.

Corcoran sends Detective Maguire to find Doctor Matthew Freeman, but when there's no answer at the Freeman home, Detective Maguire decides to invite himself in.
