Ellen Corcoran is the troubled wife of Detective Kevin Corcoran, who went mysteriously missing from her Five Points home while Kevin served as a Union soldier in the Civil War. After a long and frustrating search for his missing wife, Kevin discovered Ellen at Manhattan’s Earle House – a home for mentally ill women. Ellen is found drugged beyond comprehension and does not recognize her husband, but is nursed back to health by Doctor Matthew Freeman. While her husband was at war, Ellen had an affair with Detective Francis Maguire, and the two conceived a child. Ellen went to Madame Grindle to terminate the pregnancy, and was left traumatized by the procedure. As her mental health deteriorated, Ellen became violent, mistakenly pushing with her crying six-year-old daughter, Maggie, to her death.
