When DI Alex Drake is shot and lands in 1981, she comes face-to-face with DCI Gene Hunt, the relic of old-fashioned policing she read about in Sam Tyler’s reports. Alex thinks she is in a coma and needs Hunt’s help to go after Layton, the man who shot her in 2008. She is confident she knows the rules of the game, but with no contact from the present world Alex has to contend with a terrifying possibility.
Hunt has his own problems to deal with, specifically the growing drug problem in London. He is convinced that yuppie playboy, Edward Markham is behind it. Already butting heads with Hunt, Alex believes the mastermind behind the case is Layton, who in 1981 is a dealer and possibly the key to 2008. Together, Gene and Alex plan a drug bust to catch the dealers and hopefully find a way out of 1981.
