Eleven people are spending three weeks living on a garbage dump to highlight the mountain of trash thrown away needlessly in Britain.

Every year residents of Britain throw away an average of ½ a ton of rubbish each – including hundreds of dollars worth of food - with just a quarter of it being recycled. The rest ends up in a landfill. That ranks the UK in the bottom three European nations for recycling, with the Dutch and Germans recycling more than twice as much. Why is so little being done by government, councils and businesses – as well as individuals – to stop this waste of resources, and what can we all do about it?

This thought-provoking series challenges the participants to try to live off of what others throw away. Like most people, many of the participants have never given a second thought to what they chuck out, but the project will bring them face-to-face not only with the reality of Britain’s trash mountains, but also the simple steps we can all take to make a difference. But will three weeks surviving on other people’s rubbish change the way they live their own lives?
