In the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh, corrupt cop Brendan McCabe is being drowned in a tank of live lobsters. His killers are Detective Sergeant Frank Agnew and Detective Constable Joe Geddes, McCabe's partner. Both are seeking revenge.

They strap McCabe into his car, dump it in the sea and concoct an elaborate cover-up plan, confident that when the body is found, suicide will be the obvious verdict. But when the car is fished out of the Firth, a mutilated corpse is also discovered in the boot of McCabe's car and Agnew finds himself leading an investigation into a spate of murders, one of which he himself committed.
