Some of these choices are brilliant for their sheer trainwreck
potential (Corinne Bailey Rae covering Jack
White?!!). Others are simply genius (can't wait to hear
Mike Skinner's spoken-word take on the Elton John/Bernie
Taupin classic, "Your Song"). But it's a cool idea: to
celebrate 40 years on air, BBC Radio 1 is releasing an album
featuring contemporary artists covering classic hits from each
calendar year since 1967. The Sun's Victoria Newton and Simon at
No Rock and Roll Fun both give their takes on
the list.

protest record when we virtually all agree with the sentiment?
Singing about Iraq being a disaster is a bit like singing about

- Radiohead will not release their new album until 2008,
which would mean a five-year gap between their latest and 2003's
Hail To the Thief. So they have no excuse to give us
another Amnesiac.

- Mike Skinner of the Streets is hosting a bong-making
competition to promote his performance at the Get Loaded in the
Park (heh) festival. NME reports that "the winner gets a pair of VIP
passes to Get Loaded In the Park, plus a chance to 'demonstrate'
their bong in front of thousands of pople." Kind of puts Calvin
Harris' call for a few silly house parties in perspective,
doesn't it?
- A documentary about Morrissey fans, titled Passions
Just Like Mine, is almost done. They didn't even think
to interview me!
