Some of these choices are brilliant for their sheer trainwreck potential (Corinne Bailey Rae covering Jack White?!!). Others are simply genius (can't wait to hear Mike Skinner's spoken-word take on the Elton John/Bernie Taupin classic, "Your Song"). But it's a cool idea: to celebrate 40 years on air, BBC Radio 1 is releasing an album featuring contemporary artists covering classic hits from each calendar year since 1967. The Sun's Victoria Newton and Simon at No Rock and Roll Fun both give their takes on the list.

Below is the full tracklist, with links to the original, plus a link to a song from the artist covering it. I encourage you to listen to the original track and then the track from the contemporary artist; the juxtapositions are, at times, jarring.
1967 - Flowers In The Rain (The Move) by Kaiser Chiefs
1968 - All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix Experience) by The Fratellis
1969 - Cupid (Johnny Nash) by Amy Winehouse

1972 - Betcha By Golly Wow (The Stylistics) by Sugababes

1974 - Band On The Run (Wings) by Foo Fighters
1975 - Love Is The Drug (Roxy Music) by Kylie
1976 - Let's Stick Together (Bryan Ferry) by KT Tunstall
1977 - Sound & Vision (David Bowie) by Franz Ferdinand
1978 - Teenage Kicks (The Undertones) by The Raconteurs
1979 - Can't Stand Losing You (The Police) by Mika
1980 - Too Much Too Young (The Specials) by Kasabian
1981 - Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie) by Keane
1982 - Town Called Malice (The Jam) by McFly
1983 - Come Back And Stay (Paul Young) by James Morrison
1984 - Careless Whisper (George Michael) by The Gossip
1985 - The Power Of Love (Huey Lewis & The News) by Pigeon Detectives

1993 - All That She Wants (Ace Of Base) by The Kooks
1994 - You're All I Need To Get By (Mary J Blige) by Mark Ronson
1995 - Stillness In Time (Jamiroquai) by Calvin Harris
1996 - No Diggity (Blackstreet) by Klaxons
1997 - Love Fool (The Cardigans) by Just Jack
1998 - Ray Of Light (Madonna) by Natasha Bedingfield
1999 - Drinking in LA (Bran Van 3000) by The Twang
2000 - The Great Beyond (REM) by The Fray

2005 - Father & Son (Yusuf & Ronan Keating) by The Enemy
2006 - Steady As She Goes (The Raconteurs) by Corinne Bailey Rae
I'd say that's quite enough "Anglo For Your Ear" for the day.

In other news:

  • Ian Brown, formerly of Stone Roses, has written a protest song about the Iraq war, and The Guardian's Dave Simpson wonders why more Britsh artists aren't doing the same. Reader SV80's sentiment mirrors my own: "What's the point of a protest record when we virtually all agree with the sentiment? Singing about Iraq being a disaster is a bit like singing about water being wet. The problem isn't a fear of speaking out, it's simply not necessary to preach to the converted."

  • Radiohead will not release their new album until 2008, which would mean a five-year gap between their latest and 2003's Hail To the Thief. So they have no excuse to give us another Amnesiac. (NME)

  • Mercury Prize odds: Bat For Lashes' Fur and Gold and Jamie T's Panic Prevention are tied for second behind Amy Winehouse's Back To Black as favorites. The Arctic Monkeys album has fallen to fourth.

  • A Newcastle resident has been fined for blasting the Wham! song "Last Christmas" all night long. (BBC)

  • Mike Skinner of the Streets is hosting a bong-making competition to promote his performance at the Get Loaded in the Park (heh) festival. NME reports that "the winner gets a pair of VIP passes to Get Loaded In the Park, plus a chance to 'demonstrate' their bong in front of thousands of pople." Kind of puts Calvin Harris' call for a few silly house parties in perspective, doesn't it?

  • A documentary about Morrissey fans, titled Passions Just Like Mine, is almost done. They didn't even think to interview me! (Starpulse)

  • James Jagger, son of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, is set to make his London stage debut. (Contact Music)
